CFTC strengthens digital asset oversight with new leaders

The CFTC appointed Donald Battle and J. Matthew Haws to key roles, reinforcing its focus on digital asset oversight and regulatory modernization amid debates over federal crypto regulation.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has appointed Donald Battle as Chief Data Innovation Officer and J. Matthew Haws as Senior Adviser to the Chairman and Chicago Regional Lead. Battle brings significant expertise in blockchain forensics, data science, artificial intelligence, and crypto enforcement, having previously worked at the SEC and the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Haws offers over 13 years of experience in derivatives regulation and legal counsel for global financial institutions. Their appointments reflect the CFTC’s commitment to expanding its leadership and enhancing its oversight of digital assets. These changes come as the CFTC addresses challenges such as a decline in crypto enforcement actions and internal staff transitions. The agency is also navigating ongoing Congressional debates over the CLARITY Act, which aims to clarify the regulatory roles of the CFTC and SEC in digital asset markets, while emphasizing innovation and regulatory modernization.
