Mastercard secures NY BitLicense for crypto expansion
Mastercard has received a New York BitLicense, enabling it to expand regulated digital asset and crypto payment services, especially in stablecoins and tokenized deposits.
Mastercard has obtained a BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), one of the most stringent regulatory approvals in the U.S. digital asset sector. This license, granted to Mastercard Transaction Services (U.S.) LLC, allows the company to engage in digital asset and virtual currency activities, including stablecoin infrastructure, tokenized deposits, and blockchain-based payment systems. The BitLicense regime, established in 2015, enforces rigorous standards for cybersecurity, consumer protection, anti-money laundering compliance, and operational resilience. Mastercard’s approval places it among a select group of NYDFS-regulated digital asset operators, reinforcing its commitment to compliance and security. This milestone supports Mastercard’s broader strategy to innovate in digital asset payments and settlement infrastructure while maintaining robust oversight and risk management. The move aligns with the rapid growth of the stablecoin market and tokenized payments, as blockchain networks are expected to reduce costs and accelerate global transactions.
