U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve announcement expected
A U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve announcement is expected soon. The reserve will hold seized Bitcoin as a federal asset, with improved security, pending congressional approval.
An announcement about the U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) is anticipated in the coming weeks, according to Patrick Witt. The White House has been working to audit, centralize, and secure federal Bitcoin and other digital assets, following an executive order signed in March 2025. This order halted previous "fire sale" liquidations of seized crypto and instructed agencies to audit their holdings. The reserve will consist solely of Bitcoin forfeited through criminal or civil asset seizures, not purchased on the open market. These assets are to be maintained as a reserve, not sold. Recent security incidents involving the U.S. Marshals Service have highlighted the need for improved asset protection and centralization. The total size of the government’s crypto holdings remains undisclosed, and assets from ongoing cases will be added only after forfeiture is finalized. Formalizing the reserve will require congressional action, with related legislation currently under consideration.
