White House prepares US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve update
The White House will soon announce new measures for the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, aiming to secure government-held Bitcoin as lawmakers seek to authorize up to 1 million BTC acquisitions.
The White House is preparing a major announcement regarding the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, expected within weeks. This reserve was established by an executive order signed on March 6, 2025, and is composed of government-held Bitcoin obtained through criminal and civil forfeitures. The order prohibits the sale of these coins, ensuring their long-term retention. Lawmakers are actively working to codify the reserve into law. Proposed legislation would authorize the acquisition of up to 1 million BTC over five years, using budget-neutral strategies. White House digital asset adviser Patrick Witt emphasized that the administration is addressing legal and operational challenges to secure and protect these digital assets on the government balance sheet. Additionally, the executive order directed the creation of a separate digital asset stockpile and tasked the Treasury with establishing custodial accounts for the reserve. The forthcoming announcement is expected to outline the next steps in formalizing and safeguarding the reserve as legislative efforts progress.
