Anthropic challenges U.S. over AI supply chain risk label

Anthropic sued the U.S. government after being labeled a supply chain risk for refusing to remove AI safety guardrails. The lawsuits seek to overturn the designation and related restrictions.

Anthropic has initiated multiple lawsuits against the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal agencies after being labeled a supply chain and national security risk. The dispute centers on Anthropic's refusal to remove AI safety guardrails from its Claude system, which are designed to prevent misuse for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance of U.S. citizens. The Pentagon sought unrestricted access to Claude for any legal purpose, but Anthropic insisted on maintaining ethical limitations. Following the risk designation, the government suspended a contract worth up to $200 million and directed agencies to stop using Anthropic's products. Anthropic argues that the government's actions are unlawful, violate its First Amendment and due process rights, and exceed its authority. The lawsuits, filed in California and Washington D.C., aim to overturn the risk designation and prevent its enforcement. The outcome could set a precedent for AI regulation in national security.
