Russian authorities have initiated a criminal investigation against Telegram founder Pavel Durov, accusing him of facilitating terrorist activities. The case, based on materials from the Federal Security Service (FSB) and reported by state-affiliated outlets like Rossiyskaya Gazeta, alleges that Telegram refused to remove channels flagged for illegal content. Officials claim the platform was used in connection with crimes such as the Crocus City Hall attack and the killings of Darya Dugina and Maxim Fomin. The Kremlin confirmed the investigation, citing Telegram’s repeated refusal to cooperate with Russian authorities and remove content deemed illegal. Russian officials further allege that Telegram is exploited by Western and Ukrainian intelligence services, posing a threat to national security. In response, Russia is imposing new restrictions on Telegram and encouraging users to switch to a state-backed alternative. Telegram’s management has not commented on the allegations.
