Bitcoin exchange reserves hit multi-year low amid rally
Bitcoin exchange reserves have dropped to a multi-year low of 2.68 million BTC as prices recover. Analysts warn outflows may have several causes beyond bullish sentiment.
Bitcoin exchange reserves have dropped to a multi-year low of approximately 2.68 million BTC as of October 3, according to CryptoQuant. This decline aligns with Bitcoin’s recent price recovery to around $87,000 and reflects a consistent trend of traders withdrawing tokens from exchanges. A reduction in exchange reserves is often seen as a sign of accumulation or long-term holding, with investors moving assets into private wallets and reducing the supply available for sale. However, analysts caution that declining exchange balances do not automatically signal a bullish outlook, as outflows may also be driven by changes in exchange policies, institutional custody transfers, or security concerns. The current reserve level is the lowest since 2023, continuing a downward trend that began after reserves peaked at about 3.2 million BTC in early 2024, when Bitcoin traded below $70,000. This pattern has persisted across several market cycles, regardless of price fluctuations.
