Shopify Q2: Revenue jumps 34%, shares surge

Shopify posted 34% revenue growth and $115.6B GMV in Q2, with shares surging up to 30%. The company highlights enterprise migration and crypto payments as key growth drivers.

Shopify delivered a robust second quarter, reporting a 34% year-over-year revenue increase to $3.58 billion and a gross merchandise volume (GMV) of $115.6 billion. This impressive performance triggered an intraday share price surge of up to 30%, though shares ultimately closed near their session low in a gap-and-fade pattern. Operating profit soared by 68%, while free cash flow reached $654 million. Merchant Solutions contributed 78% of total sales. Notably, two-thirds of net income stemmed from Shopify’s equity portfolio; excluding investments, net income was $439 million, marking a 30% annual increase. Looking ahead, Shopify anticipates similar growth in the third quarter. The company is emphasizing the migration of large merchants to Shopify Plus and POS, which could boost switching costs and enhance transaction mix value. Additionally, Shopify continues to invest in crypto payments integration, viewing it as an underappreciated growth catalyst.
