CME Group launches sports event futures and options
CME Group will launch futures and options on sports events with FutureSports and FanDuel. Pending approval, cash-settled contracts may trade this summer, offering new risk management tools.
CME Group is preparing to introduce futures and options contracts linked to professional and college sports events, signaling a significant expansion of derivatives into the sports industry. This initiative involves collaborations with index providers such as FutureSports and FanDuel, offering cash-settled contracts based on statistical performance indices and CFTC-regulated event derivatives. The first contracts, referencing indices like the FutureSports Performance Index, could begin trading as early as this summer, pending regulatory approval. These products are designed as hedging tools for stakeholders including stadium owners, sponsors, and other industry participants, enabling new risk management and price discovery opportunities. Contracts will feature monthly and quarterly expirations and rely on official league statistics. This move is expected to attract both institutional and retail investors, potentially transforming investment strategies and the market for sports-related financial products.
