London Stock Exchange to launch overnight trading in 2027

The London Stock Exchange will launch an overnight trading venue in 2027, expanding access to ETPs and responding to demand for round-the-clock trading amid crypto competition.

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) plans to introduce a dedicated overnight trading venue in the first half of 2027. This new market will extend access to exchange-traded products (ETPs) beyond the main daytime session, operating from 5:00 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. London time, with a short pause for end-of-day processing. The main exchange will continue its regular hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This initiative is a response to increasing competition from crypto platforms and tokenized equity markets, which offer 24/7 trading, as well as rising retail demand for continuous market access. Initially, the overnight venue will focus on ETPs, including funds tracking UK and US stock markets, and will remain operationally separate from the main exchange. The move is expected to provide near-continuous access for investors during the working week, particularly benefiting international and Asian investors whose trading hours overlap with the new session. The LSE is still evaluating the possibility of adding individual company shares in the future, as it navigates regulatory and operational considerations.
