Charles Schwab unveils S&P 500 prediction markets

Charles Schwab partners with Cboe to launch binary-style S&P 500 options, enabling yes-or-no bets with fixed or partial payouts. Rollout is expected soon.

Charles Schwab is entering the prediction markets sector through a partnership with Cboe Global Markets, launching binary-style options contracts tied to the S&P 500 index. These contracts will enable retail investors to place yes-or-no bets on whether the index closes above or below certain levels, offering fixed payouts for correct predictions or expiring worthless if not. Schwab plans to introduce a "Plus Zone" feature, which will provide partial payouts for near-correct predictions. The rollout is expected in the coming months, initially focusing on financial benchmarks, with no plans to expand into sports or entertainment markets. This initiative sets Schwab apart by operating within established exchange infrastructure and concentrating solely on financial outcomes. The move responds to increasing competition in the prediction market space and aims to offer a simpler trading product for retail clients. However, potential regulatory restrictions and tighter margin rules could impact trading activity and client balances.
