Centralized crypto perpetuals face rising DEX competition

Centralized exchanges lead crypto perpetuals, but Perp DEXs now hold over 10% of trading volume and 13.5% of open interest, quickly closing the gap.

Centralized exchanges continue to dominate the crypto perpetual futures market, with Binance and OKX leading the sector. In 2025, centralized platforms processed $85.3 trillion in trading volume. By early 2026, Binance held a 33% market share, while OKX accounted for 15%. However, decentralized perpetual exchanges (Perp DEXs) are rapidly gaining ground. Their share of trading volume grew from 2% in early 2024 to over 10% by April 2026, and their share of open interest reached 13.5%. Hyperliquid emerged as a top Perp DEX, handling $190.28 billion in April 2026 and joining the global top 10 with $1.5 trillion in cumulative volume. The rise of Perp DEXs is driven by improved product design, increased on-chain activity, and a growing demand for self-custody. While centralized exchanges still dominate liquidity and trading, the gap is narrowing as decentralized platforms become significant competitors, signaling a major shift in the crypto derivatives landscape.
