Bitwise CIO: Crypto winter deepens, recovery signs emerge
Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan says the current "crypto winter" began in Jan 2025, with deep losses and fear, but sees signs of a cycle bottom and possible recovery in 2026.
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan has labeled the current cryptocurrency market downturn as a true "crypto winter," likening it to the bear markets of 2018 and 2022. He notes that this decline began in January 2025 and has persisted despite positive developments such as increased institutional adoption and regulatory progress. Hougan attributes the slump to excessive leverage, profit-taking, and a general market cooldown. He also points out that ETF and corporate treasury inflows have masked the true extent of losses. Major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen significant drops, with Bitcoin down about 39% and Ethereum roughly 53% from their all-time highs. Despite extreme fear dominating sentiment, Hougan and other analysts believe the market could be nearing the end of this cycle, as such pessimism often signals a bottom. While Bitcoin struggles to break the $80,000 resistance and gold hits new highs, Hougan remains cautiously optimistic for a recovery in 2026, citing the cyclical nature of crypto markets and ongoing institutional interest.
