U.S. Treasury yields reach 20-year highs
U.S. Treasury yields hit near 20-year highs, with the 10-year at 5.058% and the 5-year above 5%, pressuring stocks and boosting the dollar.
Yields on U.S. Treasury bonds surged to levels not seen in nearly two decades. The 10-year bond yield climbed to 5.058%, its highest since 2007, fueled by robust economic data in the services and manufacturing sectors and expectations of further Federal Reserve rate hikes. The 5-year bond yield also jumped, rising from 4.393% to 5.033%, while the 2-year yield reached 4.79%, setting a new annual high. This sharp increase in yields exerted downward pressure on stock markets, particularly in the technology sector, and led to a stronger U.S. dollar. These movements highlight investors' reassessment of how long restrictive monetary policy and elevated interest rates may persist, impacting both equities and currency markets.
