Norway’s Wealth Fund Backs Metaplanet’s Bold Bitcoin Move
Norway’s sovereign wealth fund has voted to support Metaplanet’s Bitcoin-focused treasury strategy, endorsing proposals for preferred shares and capital flexibility to enable further Bitcoin accumulation.
Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, managed by Norges Bank Investment Management, has voted in favor of all five management proposals from Metaplanet, a Japanese firm pursuing a Bitcoin-focused treasury strategy. The fund, which holds a small but symbolically significant stake in Metaplanet, endorsed measures including the introduction of perpetual preferred shares, capital stock reduction, and expanded capital flexibility to facilitate non-dilutive Bitcoin accumulation. These proposals, set for a final vote on December 22, aim to allow Metaplanet to use excess capital and potential debt issuance to acquire and hold Bitcoin as a primary treasury reserve asset. The fund’s support reflects a growing trend among institutional investors to gain Bitcoin exposure through equity stakes in companies with crypto treasury strategies, rather than direct cryptocurrency holdings. Metaplanet’s approach is seen as a model for other listed companies in Asia, and the fund’s backing is expected to enhance the credibility and legitimacy of such strategies in global finance. The outcome of the upcoming shareholder meeting will determine how aggressively Metaplanet can expand its Bitcoin holdings moving into 2026.
