Pump.fun’s $205M PUMP Buyback Sets Solana Record, Sparks Debate

Pump.fun has bought back over $205 million in PUMP tokens, retiring 13.8% of supply and setting a Solana record. Despite this, PUMP’s price remains low, and the platform faces criticism over community value.

Pump.fun has executed a record-breaking buyback of its native PUMP token, repurchasing over $205 million worth and retiring approximately 13.8% of the token’s circulating supply within five months. This initiative, funded by daily platform fees, surpasses all previous buybacks on the Solana blockchain, overtaking Raydium. The buyback program uses nearly all daily revenue to purchase PUMP from the open market, aiming to reduce supply, stabilize price, and reward holders. Despite these efforts, PUMP’s price remains near recent lows, and some community members question the tangible benefits, as many holders are still at a loss. Pump.fun has also faced criticism for not staking its SOL reserves. The platform, which enables rapid meme token launches, has powered over 80% of Solana’s token launches but has seen a slowdown in new token creation and a decline in meme token trading volumes. The buyback model, however, sets a new benchmark for Solana projects and may influence future community reward strategies.
