OpenAI cuts fundraising target amid market volatility
OpenAI has cut its fundraising target to $20B and valuation to $1.25T, citing reduced investor interest and tech market volatility.
OpenAI has lowered its fundraising target and company valuation in response to recent volatility in technology and AI-related stocks. Initially, OpenAI aimed to raise $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation. However, the company is now seeking about $20 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, according to reports citing the Financial Times. This adjustment comes as investor interest has waned, with some participants reducing their commitments and concerns growing over debt-financed AI infrastructure. OpenAI set a deadline for investors to confirm participation, but the first tranche of the round is expected to fall short of the new goal. Competition from Anthropic, which is preparing for a public offering and targeting up to $100 billion at a $1.5 trillion valuation, has also influenced OpenAI’s decision. OpenAI has postponed its own IPO plans to 2027 and is now focused on securing private equity. The revised strategy reflects a more cautious approach amid ongoing market uncertainty and competitive pressures in the AI sector.
