Crypto vaults top $10B: Yield versus risk
Crypto vault deposits top $10B, fueled by yield demand but facing risks and increasing regulatory scrutiny in the U.S. and Europe.
Crypto lending vault deposits have surged past $10 billion, rising from about $4 billion in less than two years, according to multiple industry sources. This rapid growth highlights the increasing interest from both institutional and retail investors seeking yields on digital assets, particularly stablecoins such as Tether. These vaults are managed by curators who select lending strategies and set risk parameters. They typically offer annual yields between 3% and 10%, with some riskier strategies exceeding 20%. However, these attractive returns come with significant risks, including borrower defaults, illiquid collateral, smart contract vulnerabilities, and the absence of federal insurance. The expansion of crypto vaults has caught the attention of regulators in the U.S. and Europe, who are now evaluating how to apply existing financial regulations and whether to introduce clearer requirements for managers and intermediaries. For those with short-term funds, some analysts recommend considering safer instruments like Treasury bonds.
