Coinbase launches tokenized stocks on Base blockchain
Coinbase launched tokenized U.S. stocks on Base for non-U.S. users, starting with Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet. Tokens are tradable 24/7 and compatible with DeFi protocols.
Coinbase has introduced tokenized U.S. stocks on its Base blockchain, beginning with shares of Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet. These tokenized equities are available to eligible users outside the United States and are fully backed 1:1 by underlying shares held by regulated custodian Alpaca. Users can trade these tokens 24/7 via self-custody wallets and onchain applications, utilizing the B20 standard for seamless integration with DeFi protocols. This enables holding, transferring, and trading of fractional shares, as well as using them as collateral in lending protocols like Aave or supplying them to liquidity markets. The rollout operates under the Abu Dhabi Global Market regulatory framework, following Coinbase's establishment of its international tokenization hub in Abu Dhabi. This initiative marks a significant step in merging traditional equities with DeFi, with more tokenized stocks expected soon. Coinbase highlights tokenization as a transformative upgrade for global finance, poised to attract institutional interest.
