Stripe to acquire OpenRouter in $7B+ AI infrastructure deal

Stripe is acquiring OpenRouter for over $7B, gaining a unified API for hundreds of AI models and millions of users. This marks a major expansion into AI infrastructure for Stripe.

Stripe is reportedly finalizing the acquisition of AI infrastructure startup OpenRouter for over $7 billion, with some sources suggesting the deal could reach $10 billion. Founded in 2023, OpenRouter provides a unified API platform, granting developers access to 400–500 large language models from more than 60 providers. This simplifies integration and optimizes routing based on cost, speed, and reliability. OpenRouter processes trillions of tokens monthly and serves millions of users globally. After a $113 million Series B round in May 2026, the company was valued at $1.3 billion, making this acquisition a significant leap in valuation. Stripe, which already manages payments for OpenRouter, aims to expand its footprint in AI infrastructure, moving beyond payments to include AI model inference and management. While reports indicate an agreement, official confirmation from Stripe is still pending.
