PayPal nears $53 billion sale to Stripe and Advent

PayPal is in talks to be acquired by Stripe and Advent for $53B. An initial $60.50/share offer was rejected, but negotiations continue and a deal may be reached soon.

PayPal is reportedly in advanced talks to be acquired by Stripe and private equity firm Advent, with the deal valued at around $53 billion. In July, Stripe and Advent offered $60.50 per share, but PayPal initially rejected the proposal as too low. Negotiations have since resumed, and a final agreement could be reached within weeks, though there is no guarantee a deal will be finalized. The potential sale is part of a restructuring plan led by CEO Enrique Lores, who took over in March to address PayPal’s declining growth. The plan includes splitting the company into three segments and reducing the workforce by 20% over the next two to three years. PayPal’s market value has plummeted from its 2021 peak of over $280 billion to about $53 billion. Neither PayPal nor Stripe has commented on the ongoing negotiations, while Stripe stated it does not respond to rumors or speculation. News of the renewed talks caused PayPal’s stock price to rise by 1.8%.
