Metaplanet moves 3,881 BTC internally amid $1.4B loss
Metaplanet shifted 3,881 BTC ($247M) between its own wallets, signaling internal reshuffling—not a sale. The firm holds 43,000 BTC and faces a $1.4B unrealized loss as Bitcoin trades below its average buy price.
Metaplanet, a Japanese firm known for its substantial Bitcoin holdings, recently transferred 3,881 BTC—valued at approximately $247 million—between its own wallets over a three-hour period. According to multiple sources, these transactions moved Bitcoin from cold storage to new addresses also controlled by Metaplanet, rather than to exchanges. This indicates the activity was an internal transfer, not a sale. This move mirrors previous internal custody reshuffling by the company, such as a similar transaction in March. Metaplanet currently holds about 43,000 BTC at an average acquisition cost of $96,000 per Bitcoin. With Bitcoin trading near $63,600, the company is facing an unrealized loss of roughly $1.4 billion, or 34%. The purpose of the latest transfers has not been officially disclosed. However, on-chain data and analyst commentary suggest there is no evidence of asset liquidation. Metaplanet remains one of the most aggressive institutional Bitcoin buyers, with a stated target of 210,000 BTC. The crypto community continues to monitor these developments closely.
