Mirae Asset acquires Korbit, rebrands as DigitalX

Mirae Asset acquired 97.15% of Korbit, rebranding it as DigitalX. This marks the first Korean financial group to control a domestic crypto exchange. Korbit’s operations and customer protections remain unchanged.

Mirae Asset Financial Group, via its affiliate Mirae Asset Consulting, has acquired a 97.15% stake in Korbit, one of South Korea’s oldest cryptocurrency exchanges. This acquisition, finalized after regulatory approval, marks the first time a traditional Korean financial group has taken control of a domestic crypto exchange. Following the deal, Mirae Asset rebranded Korbit as DigitalX, removing the need for external bank partnerships that other Korean exchanges use for retail deposits. Despite the change in ownership and branding, Korbit’s legal entity and operations remain unchanged. All services, including deposits and withdrawals, continue without interruption. Customer assets will still be managed separately in line with South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act. Mirae Asset’s total investment reached 141.4 billion won (about $97 million). The group plans to leverage this acquisition as a foundation for a global investment platform spanning both traditional and digital assets, though specific strategies and product integrations have yet to be announced.
