Base App pivots after failed social strategy
Jesse Pollak steps down as Base App lead after social features flop. Cobie takes over as Base pivots to trading, payments, and AI agents.
Jesse Pollak has stepped down from leading the Base App, acknowledging that the network’s previous focus on onchain social features and creator coins did not drive adoption as hoped. Many of these initiatives, including projects like Farcaster, Zora, miniapps, and creator coins, failed to gain traction, leaving some investors at a loss. Leadership of the Base App will now transition to Jordan Fish, also known as Cobie, following Coinbase’s $375 million acquisition of his fundraising platform, Echo. While developers contributed to the growth of stablecoins, prediction markets, and perpetuals, the social side struggled and key features have since been discontinued. Going forward, Base will prioritize trading, payments, and AI agents, aiming to establish itself as a core infrastructure for global finance. Pollak will focus on developing Base’s chain infrastructure, while Cobie will lead the next phase of the consumer app.
