Ben Bernanke joins Anthropic’s AI oversight board

Ben Bernanke joins Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust, overseeing the AI firm’s mission and board to ensure ethical, public-benefit AI development.

Ben Bernanke has joined Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust, an independent governance body overseeing the AI company’s alignment with its public mission. Established in 2023, the Trust holds special Class T shares, allowing trustees to elect an increasing share of Anthropic’s board, aiming for majority control within four years. Trustees are insulated from financial incentives and can overrule shareholders if the company strays from its mission of developing AI safely for the public good. The Trust also guides company leadership and can appoint or remove board members. Bernanke joins current trustees Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine, and Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar. Anthropic, valued at $965 billion and reportedly preparing for an IPO, sees the Trust as essential for ensuring ethical, long-term AI development. Bernanke’s experience in economic policy and crisis management is expected to help assess AI’s impact on the economy and labor markets.
