Vanguard seeks digital assets chief, signaling crypto shift

Vanguard is hiring its first Head of Digital Assets, signaling a strategic shift toward crypto and blockchain initiatives after years of skepticism.

Vanguard, one of the world’s largest asset managers with over $10 trillion in assets, is making a significant move in the digital asset space by seeking its first Head of Digital Assets. This newly established senior position will be responsible for shaping Vanguard’s digital asset strategy, with a focus on tokenization, stablecoins, wallets, custody models, settlement, and blockchain-enabled operating models. The Head of Digital Assets will develop a multi-year roadmap, oversee product development, ensure legal compliance, manage risk, and engage with regulators. This strategic hire comes after Vanguard’s recent decision to permit clients to trade third-party crypto ETFs and mutual funds, marking a notable departure from its previous skepticism toward cryptocurrencies. Although Vanguard currently has no plans to launch its own crypto products, the creation of this executive role highlights a clear pivot and growing interest in expanding its digital asset capabilities.
