South Korean funeral firm loses $33M on Ethereum ETF

Bumo Sarang lost $33M after investing client funds in a leveraged Ethereum ETF, raising concerns about risky investments and solvency in South Korea’s funeral sector.

Bumo Sarang, one of South Korea’s largest funeral and mutual aid companies, suffered a loss of approximately 49.3 billion won (about $33 million) after investing 59.5 billion won of client funds into a leveraged ETF tied to Bitmine, a stock linked to Ethereum. The ETF, designed to double Bitmine’s daily returns, plummeted in value during a market downturn, resulting in substantial book losses for the company. This incident has brought attention to the financial management practices within South Korea’s funeral service sector. Reports indicate that nearly 43% of companies in the industry have fewer assets than their obligations to clients, highlighting systemic vulnerabilities. The lack of strict financial oversight and regulatory requirements for these firms has raised concerns about the exposure of customer advance payments to high-risk crypto investments and the overall solvency of the industry.
