KDDI invests $65M in Coincheck to expand crypto in Japan
KDDI invests $65M for a 14.9% stake in Coincheck, aiming to boost crypto access in Japan through business alliances, wallet launches, and platform integration. The deal is set to close in June.
KDDI, a major Japanese telecommunications firm, is investing $65 million to acquire a 14.9% stake in Coincheck Group, a leading crypto exchange. The deal involves KDDI subscribing to 28.5 million newly issued Coincheck shares at $2.28 each, with the transaction expected to close in June. This strategic partnership includes a business alliance focused on customer referrals, revenue sharing, and joint initiatives to expand cryptocurrency access across KDDI’s large consumer base. KDDI will also gain the right to nominate a non-executive director to Coincheck’s board. The collaboration aims to integrate Coincheck’s crypto services with KDDI’s digital platforms, including the au PAY payment ecosystem. The companies will also launch a joint venture to introduce a non-custodial digital asset wallet. This move underscores KDDI’s commitment to digital finance and regulated digital asset services in Japan.
