Coinbase cuts 14% of staff, adopts AI-native structure
Coinbase is cutting 14% of staff, citing crypto volatility and AI-driven productivity. The company will restructure around smaller, AI-native teams and reduce management layers.
Coinbase has announced a workforce reduction of approximately 14%, impacting between 660 and 700 employees, as part of a shift toward an AI-native operating model. CEO Brian Armstrong explained that the move is driven by ongoing crypto market volatility and rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, which have significantly boosted productivity across the company. AI tools now enable both engineers and non-technical teams to accomplish tasks in days that once took weeks. This efficiency has prompted Coinbase to flatten its organizational structure, reduce management layers, and introduce smaller, AI-driven teams or pods. Managers are expected to become active contributors within these streamlined teams. The company is offering severance packages, including at least 16 weeks of base pay for U.S. staff and additional support for international employees. Coinbase positions this restructuring as a comprehensive operational overhaul designed to prepare for future growth and evolving industry demands.
