Bakkt finalizes DTR acquisition for stablecoin network

Bakkt completed its DTR acquisition, issuing 11.3M+ shares. The deal brings DTR’s AI and stablecoin tech to Bakkt, enabling a 24/7 digital settlement network for institutions and fintechs.

Bakkt has finalized its acquisition of Distributed Technologies Research (DTR), a firm specializing in stablecoin infrastructure and AI-driven payment technology. The transaction was completed through an equity-based deal, with Bakkt issuing over 11.3 million shares to DTR stakeholders. There is also potential for additional shares to be issued, depending on outstanding warrants. This strategic acquisition aims to integrate DTR’s AI payment engine and compliance tools into Bakkt’s institutional-grade infrastructure. The goal is to create a 24/7 digital settlement layer, supporting institutions and fintechs seeking faster, programmable, and continuous digital payments. This reduces reliance on traditional banking systems. Originally announced in January with 9.3 million shares, the deal also included a corporate name change to Bakkt Inc. The merger underscores growing institutional interest in efficient, blockchain-based payment systems and positions Bakkt as a leader in the global stablecoin economy.
