Alphabet commits $40B to Anthropic in major AI investment

Alphabet will invest up to $40B in Anthropic, including $10B upfront, $30B in milestones, and 5GW of cloud capacity, boosting its AI sector role and supporting Anthropic's growth.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, a leading AI firm known for its Claude language models. The deal includes an initial $10 billion cash investment, with an additional $30 billion tied to performance milestones. Alphabet will also provide 5 gigawatts of Google Cloud computing resources to support Anthropic’s AI research and development. This partnership positions Alphabet as Anthropic’s primary financial backer and deepens its involvement in the competitive AI sector, where infrastructure and compute resources are key. Anthropic’s annualized revenue has reportedly surpassed $30 billion, up from $9 billion at the end of 2025. While the market response has been muted, the collaboration is expected to strengthen Alphabet’s role in AI infrastructure and enable Anthropic to scale its model training and deployment. However, if Anthropic’s models underperform or adoption slows, the investment could become a costly subsidy rather than a strategic driver for Google Cloud and its TPUs.
