BlackRock CEO Larry Fink backs tokenization for finance

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink champions tokenization to modernize finance, expand access, and address inequality. BlackRock invests in blockchain to make investing faster, cheaper, and more accessible.

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, in his annual letter, emphasized the transformative potential of tokenization and digital assets for modernizing financial markets. He noted that while capitalism has generated wealth, its benefits have not been widely shared, citing rising inequality and weak market participation as evidence. Fink suggested that tokenization—recording asset ownership on digital ledgers—could make issuing, trading, and accessing investments faster, cheaper, and more accessible. BlackRock is actively investing in blockchain technology, partnering with banks to tokenize traditional assets like stocks and bonds, and managing significant digital market assets, including the world’s largest tokenized fund. He compared the impact of tokenization to the early days of the internet, arguing it could democratize investing by enabling fractional ownership and integrating investment capabilities into digital wallets. Fink urged policymakers to bridge traditional and digital finance, stressing that upgrading financial infrastructure is crucial for expanding access and addressing systemic imbalances.
