Core Scientific sells Bitcoin reserves to fund AI expansion
Core Scientific will sell nearly all of its 2,537 Bitcoin by Q1 2026 to fund AI data center expansion, marking a shift from mining to AI. Over 1,900 BTC were sold in January for $175 million.
Core Scientific (CORZ) plans to sell nearly all of its 2,537 Bitcoin holdings by the first quarter of 2026 to finance the expansion of its AI-focused data center and colocation business. In January, the company sold over 1,900 Bitcoin for approximately $175 million at an average price of $92,100 per BTC, well above the current market rate. This move signals a strategic shift from accumulating Bitcoin to monetizing reserves, with proceeds allocated for capital expenditures and liquidity to support AI infrastructure growth. By the end of 2025, all Bitcoin held by Core Scientific was self-mined, and the company’s holdings had increased nearly tenfold over the previous year. Management has indicated that Bitcoin mining is no longer a long-term focus, maintaining operations mainly to meet power requirements as legacy sites are converted for AI and high-performance computing. The company ended 2025 with about $530 million in liquidity and highlighted up to $4 billion in potential financing linked to its CoreWeave contract.
