Danske Bank ends crypto ban, launches Bitcoin & Ethereum ETPs

Danske Bank now offers Bitcoin and Ethereum ETPs, ending its eight-year crypto ban. The move meets customer demand and regulatory clarity, but crypto is still considered high risk.

Danske Bank, Denmark’s largest financial institution, has lifted its eight-year ban on cryptocurrency services. Customers can now invest in Bitcoin and Ethereum through exchange-traded products (ETPs) offered via Danske eBanking and Mobile Banking. This change is driven by increased customer demand and a more established regulatory framework, especially after the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. The bank offers three ETPs—two for Bitcoin and one for Ethereum—issued by reputable providers like BlackRock and WisdomTree. These products are regulated under MiFID II, ensuring greater transparency and investor protection. Customers do not need digital wallets or direct token custody to participate. Danske Bank stresses that cryptocurrencies remain high-risk assets and are not recommended as core portfolio holdings. Suitability assessments are required, and the service targets self-directed clients without investment advice. This policy shift highlights the growing integration of digital assets in traditional banking, balanced with strong risk management.
