Ethiopia seeks partners for state Bitcoin mining project

Ethiopia is launching a state-backed Bitcoin mining project, seeking global partners to invest capital and expertise, aiming to use renewable energy and boost the digital economy.

Ethiopia has unveiled plans for a state-backed Bitcoin mining initiative, inviting global partners to contribute capital, technology, and expertise. The government intends to harness surplus renewable energy for mining operations, aiming to generate new revenue streams and strengthen the local economy. Ethiopian Investment Holdings, the state-owned entity leading the project, is positioning Bitcoin mining as a strategic economic asset. This marks a significant shift in Ethiopia’s approach to digital assets. Currently, the country hosts 25 licensed Bitcoin miners, representing 2.5% of the global hash rate. The initiative aligns with broader economic reforms, including the “Digital Ethiopia 2030” strategy. It is expected to boost GDP, enhance technical capabilities, and modernize Ethiopia’s financial sector.
