Zcash faces debate over ending $95M dev fund by 2028
Haseeb Qureshi calls for Zcash to end its $95M development fund by 2028, sparking debate over future funding and governance models within the community.
Haseeb Qureshi has ignited a significant debate within the Zcash community by proposing the end of the Zcash development fund when its current cycle concludes in 2028. The fund, now valued at approximately $95 million due to a recent surge in ZEC’s price, currently receives 0.1875 ZEC per block, accounting for 12% of the block subsidy. Qureshi argues that the fund is now sufficiently large to complete remaining technical milestones. He warns that extending it beyond 2028 could increase governance disputes and politicization. Instead, he suggests Zcash should adopt a model similar to Bitcoin, relying on voluntary contributions for future development. Other community members, such as Huang, advocate for continued inflation-funded support, citing ongoing threats and the need for public goods. Desalle, meanwhile, cautions that subsidies may weaken miner incentives and foster dependency. The debate also touches on governance, with differing opinions on whether representatives or tokenholder voting should guide the protocol’s direction. This discussion underscores broader questions about sustainability and governance as crypto projects mature.
