Sberbank Breaks Ground with Russia’s First Crypto-Backed Loan
Sberbank issued Russia's first crypto-backed loan to Intelion Data, using mined cryptocurrency as collateral. The pilot aims to test digital asset lending, with future expansion possible if successful.
Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, has issued the country's first-ever loan secured by cryptocurrency, marking a significant milestone in the integration of digital assets into the Russian financial sector. The pilot loan was granted to Intelion Data, a major Bitcoin mining company, with the mined cryptocurrency used as collateral. The bank did not disclose the loan's amount, duration, or the specific type of cryptocurrency used. To ensure asset security, Sberbank utilized its own custody platform, Rutoken, to safeguard the collateral throughout the loan period. The initiative is described as a pilot, aiming to test the practicalities and risks of crypto-backed lending within Russia's evolving regulatory environment. Both Sberbank and Intelion Data view the move as a step forward for the industry, with potential for broader adoption if proven effective. The bank indicated readiness to collaborate with the Central Bank to develop regulatory frameworks and infrastructure for future digital asset services.
