Standard Chartered Unveils 24/7 Blockchain Tokenized Deposits in HK
Standard Chartered and Ant International launched a blockchain-based tokenized deposit solution in Hong Kong, enabling real-time, 24/7 transfers in multiple currencies and aiming to enhance treasury management and cross-border payments.
Standard Chartered, in collaboration with Ant International, has introduced a blockchain-based tokenized deposit solution in Hong Kong as part of Project Ensemble. The platform, operating on Ant International’s Whale platform, enables real-time, 24/7 transfers and treasury flows in Hong Kong dollars, offshore yuan, and US dollars. Tokenized deposits are fully backed by bank-held funds and represent digital versions of traditional deposits, not stablecoins. This innovation aims to improve cash management efficiency, reduce operational costs, and eliminate traditional banking delays, while maintaining regulatory protections. The initiative is part of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s efforts to advance distributed ledger technology in the financial sector and is expected to optimize internal treasury operations for large corporate groups. The pilot phase will run through 2026, allowing time for ecosystem development and regulatory observation. Standard Chartered’s move is seen as a strategic expansion in tokenization and blockchain integration, potentially encouraging broader adoption and regulatory progress in the region.
