Malaysia Pilots Ringgit Stablecoin with AirAsia and Standard Chartered

Capital A and Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia are piloting a ringgit-backed stablecoin under Bank Negara Malaysia’s supervision, aiming to boost digital asset adoption and financial innovation in Malaysia.

Malaysia is accelerating its digital asset initiatives as Capital A, the operator of AirAsia, and Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia collaborate to test a ringgit-backed stablecoin within Bank Negara Malaysia’s regulated innovation hub. The project aims to develop a stable digital currency pegged 1:1 to the Malaysian ringgit, with issuance and redemption mirroring the fiat value. The trial will focus on wholesale and real-world use cases, such as real-time settlements and improved treasury management, and will be conducted under close regulatory supervision to ensure compliance and customer protection. The initiative is seen as a significant step for Capital A into digital assets and aligns with Malaysia’s broader push for regulated digital currencies. The move follows the announcement of another ringgit stablecoin project and signals growing institutional interest in ringgit-linked digital instruments. The collaboration is expected to enhance financial inclusion, efficiency, and programmable financial flows, potentially transforming both the travel and financial sectors in Malaysia.
