Visa and Mastercard unveil AI agent payment pilots
Visa, BILL, and Billtrust launched an AI-powered B2B payment pilot. Mastercard opened early access to Agent Pay for Machines, enabling autonomous AI agent payments after successful pilots with key partners.
Visa, BILL, and Billtrust have launched a live pilot in Las Vegas to automate B2B invoice payments using AI agents. This initiative leverages Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, enabling secure, end-to-end transactions without manual logins. Meanwhile, Mastercard has opened early access to its Agent Pay for Machines system. This allows developers to test APIs and toolkits for machine-to-machine payments, following successful pilots with Cloudflare, Ant International, BVNK, AIsa, Base, and Coinbase. At Cloudflare Connect, demonstrations showed AI agents making multiple payments using the x402 protocol, with settlements via Coinbase, Base, and BVNK in fiat or stablecoins. Mastercard's initiative aims to let AI agents autonomously discover services, agree to terms, and pay within human-set limits, advancing frictionless transactions between autonomous software and service providers. These developments mark a major shift in digital payments as industry leaders collaborate on agentic, AI-driven solutions.
