BNY Mellon, Citadel Securities advance tokenized Treasuries

BNY Mellon and Citadel Securities settled tokenized U.S. Treasuries in minutes, using blockchain to boost settlement speed, liquidity, and efficiency in traditional financial markets.

BNY Mellon and Citadel Securities have completed a series of transactions involving tokenized U.S. Treasuries, marking a major milestone in the integration of blockchain technology with traditional finance. On July 15, 2026, Citadel Securities used the Depository Trust Company’s Tokenization Service to create and transfer tokenized Treasuries on the Canton Network, enabling secure wallet storage and collateral transfers to counterparties such as BNP Paribas and Société Générale. Separately, BNY Mellon executed a first-of-its-kind transaction on its private digital ledger, settling a tokenized 2-year U.S. Treasury note within minutes and using it as collateral in a triparty repo. These initiatives highlight how blockchain can accelerate asset movement, reduce settlement bottlenecks, and enhance collateral efficiency. BNY Mellon plans to expand digital cash and tokenized deposit services, as well as extend settlement hours to support global trading. These successful transactions underscore the growing adoption of blockchain by major financial institutions to improve efficiency, liquidity, and automation in asset management.
