Pakistan Unveils Stablecoin, Bitcoin Reserve & Digital Asset Push

Pakistan is advancing digital asset regulation, launching a rupee-backed stablecoin, and developing a Bitcoin reserve, aiming to modernize its financial system and foster innovation through regulatory clarity and technological integration.

Pakistan is making significant strides in digital asset integration by advancing its National Digital Asset Framework, involving collaboration between the State Bank, major commercial banks, and a leading cryptocurrency exchange. This initiative aims to provide regulatory clarity, foster financial inclusion, and attract foreign investment. The country has also announced plans to launch its first stablecoin, backed by the Pakistani rupee and overseen by the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), to modernize the financial system and support digital payments. The stablecoin will be fully backed by reserves and is designed to offer stability for everyday transactions and remittances. Additionally, Pakistan is developing a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and allocating substantial resources for Bitcoin mining and AI data centers. These efforts are complemented by work on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and regulatory sandboxes to ensure shariah-compliant innovation. The combined initiatives reflect Pakistan’s commitment to financial modernization, regulatory certainty, and the integration of digital assets into its economy.
