Morgan Stanley launches Digital Asset Lab for blockchain
Morgan Stanley’s Digital Asset Lab tests stablecoins, tokenization, and DeFi in a secure setting, expanding the bank’s global innovation efforts.
Morgan Stanley has launched a Digital Asset Lab to explore and test emerging blockchain technologies, including stablecoins, asset tokenization, decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, tokenized deposits, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and tokenized money-market funds. The lab is part of the bank’s global innovation network, spanning approximately 20,000 square feet across New York, Glasgow, and Bangalore. These facilities provide a secure, isolated environment for employees to experiment with blockchain systems without impacting the bank’s core infrastructure. Permanent teams and specialists from various departments staff the labs, conducting up to 270 projects annually in fields such as electronic trading, cybersecurity, and machine learning. According to executives Megan Brewer and Amy Oldenburg, the lab serves as a proving ground where technology must demonstrate scalability before wider adoption. Any product leaving the lab undergoes the same rigorous credit, custody, and conduct reviews as other firm offerings. Currently, there is no announced client launch date for the lab’s projects.
