HSBC Orion approved for UK Digital Securities Sandbox
HSBC’s Orion is the first platform approved in the UK Digital Securities Sandbox, enabling digital bond issuance and settlement, including the Digital Gilt Instrument. Orion has supported over $5B in digital bonds globally.
HSBC has received approval from the Bank of England to operate its Orion platform within the UK’s Digital Securities Sandbox (DSS), making it the first institution to go live under this regulatory framework. HSBC Orion will serve as a Digital Securities Depository, enabling the issuance, servicing, and settlement of digitally native bonds, such as the UK’s planned Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT) and corporate bonds. The DSS, jointly managed by the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority, offers a controlled environment for testing distributed ledger technology in securities markets. HSBC Orion has already facilitated over $5 billion in digital bond issuances globally. This approval extends Orion’s capabilities to the UK domestic market. The first DIGIT transaction is expected in early 2027, marking a significant step in the digitalization of traditional securities and reinforcing HSBC’s leadership in digital finance innovation.
