Czech National Bank Unveils $1M Crypto Portfolio Experiment

The Czech National Bank has launched a $1 million pilot crypto portfolio, including Bitcoin, stablecoins, and tokenized deposits, to gain hands-on experience with digital assets and blockchain technology.

The Czech National Bank (CNB) has launched a $1 million pilot crypto portfolio, marking its first direct purchase of Bitcoin, USD stablecoins, and a tokenized deposit. This initiative is designed as a controlled experiment to provide hands-on experience with digital assets, blockchain, and tokenization, while remaining separate from the CNB’s official reserves and monetary policy. Approved in October 2024, the pilot will run for two to three years and aims to test the full operational cycle of crypto assets, including acquisition, custody, transactions, accounting, auditing, security, crisis simulations, and compliance with anti-money laundering regulations. The CNB emphasizes that the project is not profit-driven and that the portfolio’s small size ensures no material impact on the bank’s financial position. The experiment is part of a broader effort to understand the potential of digital assets and future-proof financial operations, with the CNB Lab also exploring blockchain, AI, and payment technologies. The initiative reflects a growing trend among central banks to explore the role of crypto in modern finance.
