JPMorgan: Private blockchains threaten Bitcoin’s future

JPMorgan warns that permissioned blockchains in traditional finance could reduce demand, liquidity, and capital flows for public networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

JPMorgan analysts highlight that the main structural risk to Bitcoin is not recent sales or monetization by major holders, but the increasing adoption of permissioned, private blockchains by banks and financial institutions. They argue that as tokenization, payments, and settlements move to regulated, permissioned networks—valued for privacy, compliance, and regulatory clarity—the demand for public blockchains and their native tokens, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, could decline. This transition may result in reduced activity, lower liquidity, and weaker capital flows across the broader crypto ecosystem. The analysts further note that initiatives like tokenized deposits, SWIFT blockchain projects, and central bank digital currencies could accelerate this trend. Such developments might replace stablecoins in corporate transactions and further undermine Bitcoin’s market position, posing a significant challenge to the future of public blockchains.
