Coinbase gains conditional approval for bank charter

Coinbase has gained conditional approval for a national trust bank charter, enabling expanded crypto custody and new products, pending strict regulatory compliance.

Coinbase has received conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish a national trust bank charter. This marks a significant milestone for the cryptocurrency exchange, positioning Coinbase to operate as a federally regulated crypto custodian. The move could attract more institutional investors and enable Coinbase to offer new products, including tokenized securities and stablecoins. The conditional charter requires Coinbase to meet rigorous regulatory standards, such as maintaining sufficient capital reserves, robust business planning, and compliance frameworks similar to those of traditional banks. This step aligns with a broader trend of integrating crypto activities into the mainstream financial system, as the OCC has granted similar approvals to other crypto firms. The U.S. regulatory environment is becoming more favorable to crypto, with authorities easing some restrictions. If Coinbase achieves full approval, it will be able to further expand its services and market reach within the financial sector.
