ECB pushes digital euro integration with ATMs and terminals
The ECB is advancing the digital euro by seeking experts to set technical and certification standards for ATM and terminal integration, targeting a 2027 pilot with a focus on compatibility, security, and offline use.
The European Central Bank (ECB) is accelerating its digital euro initiative by launching technical workstreams aimed at integrating the digital currency with ATMs and payment terminals across Europe. Applications are now open for experts to join two groups under the Rulebook Development Group. One group will set technical standards for ATM and terminal providers, focusing on communication protocols and offline transaction capabilities. The other group will develop certification and approval frameworks to ensure secure and consistent deployment. These efforts are designed to guarantee compatibility with existing payment infrastructure, support offline payments, and maintain interoperability with European standards. A pilot phase involving banks, merchants, and Eurosystem staff is planned for 2027. However, the actual issuance of the digital euro will depend on pending legislation. The digital euro aims to complement current payment systems and provide a regulated alternative to stablecoins, with a strong emphasis on accessibility, security, and resilience throughout the eurozone.
