Ray Dalio warns CBDCs threaten financial privacy

Ray Dalio warns CBDCs could end financial privacy, enabling governments to track, tax, and control personal finances, and restrict access for political or foreign users.

Ray Dalio has repeatedly cautioned that central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could erode financial privacy and grant governments unprecedented control over personal finances. In various interviews, Dalio acknowledged that CBDCs offer efficiency and convenience, such as faster payments and easier tax collection. However, he warned that these advantages come at a significant cost: every transaction could be digitally recorded and monitored by authorities. Dalio stressed that CBDCs might enable governments to track all spending in real time, instantly tax or seize funds, and potentially restrict access for political opponents or foreign users. He also pointed out geopolitical risks, noting that foreign governments could seize digital currencies held by non-citizens. While some officials promise privacy safeguards, Dalio remains skeptical, warning that the rise of CBDCs could usher in a new era of surveillance and financial control.
