Canaan Turns Bitcoin Mining Heat Into Greenhouse Power in Canada

Canaan launched a pilot in Canada to recycle Bitcoin mining heat for greenhouse tomato production, aiming to capture up to 90% of server energy for heating and reduce agricultural costs.

Canaan has initiated a 3 MW proof-of-concept project in Manitoba, Canada, to recycle heat generated by Bitcoin mining equipment for use in commercial greenhouse operations. In partnership with Bitforest Investment, the project deploys 360 Avalon A1566HA-460T liquid-cooled servers housed in four containerized cooling modules at a tomato greenhouse. The system captures up to 90% of the electricity consumed by the mining servers as heat, which is then transferred via a closed-loop heat-exchange system to preheat intake water for the greenhouse's electric boilers. The initiative aims to maintain 95% equipment uptime over a 24-month period and seeks to reduce heating costs while supporting year-round tomato cultivation. The project will evaluate heat recovery efficiency, system stability, and operational intensity, with the potential to eliminate the need for industrial cooling towers and improve the economics of energy-intensive agriculture. Final performance metrics will be confirmed after full operation begins.
